Kristi Melissa Willis and Charles Shelby Jr. of Fremont were arrested a few hours after their dog was put down, Inside Bay Area reports. Both face two counts of failing to protect the public from a dangerous dog and one count of conspiracy, while Shelby was also charged with drug possession after police found methamphetamine in his sock.
Investigators said that the dog went after two landscapers and a woman who was trying to protect her 4-year-old son. Assistant District Attorney Colton Carmine said he decided to charge the couple with felonies because of the dog’s history.
"These attacks were totally unprovoked," he said. "The dog went after two landscapers, but they were actually able to fend it off by hitting it with their tools, and then the dog heard this woman in her garage and attacked her for no apparent reason.”
