MARION, Ill., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- A surgeon who surrendered his medical license in Massachusetts continued to work at a Veterans Administration hospital in Illinois, the Chicago Tribune said.
Dr. Jose Veizaga-Mendez resigned Aug. 13 from the hospital in Marion, Ill. Three days earlier, a patient who had had routine gallbladder surgery died from post-operative bleeding.
Katrina Shank of Murray, Ky., widow of Robert Shank, filed an administrative claim this week.
"My husband did not get the care that he should have gotten," she told the Tribune. "We put our trust in the medical profession. Whether it be a VA or a private hospital, we put our trust and our lives in their hands. For somebody not to come out of a simple surgery, it's just not right."
In Massachusetts, Veizaga-Mendez surrendered his license voluntarily after state regulators said he failed to report malpractice claims and provided substandard care to at least seven patients.
