Terror trial winds down

DALLAS, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Closing arguments were underway Tuesday in Dallas in the U.S. Justice Department's largest terrorism finance case.

Five former officials of a defunct Islamic charity, four of them U.S. citizens, stand accused of providing an estimated $12 million to fronts for Hamas terrorists, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Federal prosecutors argued Monday the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development supported terrorists in the guise of helping needy Palestinian families, the Times reported.

Defense lawyers refuted that claim, complaining about faulty FBI translations, the testimony of Israeli secret agents and attempts to play on the public's fear of terrorism.

Closing arguments are expected through Wednesday before the case goes to the jury.
