Terror-funding trial winds down in Dallas

DALLAS, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Closing arguments in the United States' largest terror-funding trial for five Muslim men began Monday in Dallas.

The men were involved with the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, which prosecutors allege funneled millions of dollars to the Palestinian Hamas movement.

All five defendants denied the fundraising was for acts of violence against Israel and claim the money was used for humanitarian works, the Los Angeles Times said.

In December 2001, U.S. President George Bush broke the news in a speech Holy Land was a front for Hamas and the charity was shut down.

Federal prosecutors spent six weeks taking testimony and entered more than 700 pieces of evidence into the trial, The Dallas Morning News reported.

If convicted, the defendants could be sentenced to life in prison.
