Accused killer's relatives lived in fear

AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Relatives of a man accused of killing six people in Texas and Pennsylvania said he was a family menace with a history of violence dating to childhood.

Paul Devoe, 44, was arrested Aug. 27 on Long Island, where he grew up, the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported Monday.

Devoe's uncle, Tommy O'Connell, said he believed Devoe intended to harm family members on Long Island after completing his alleged killing spree in Texas and Pennsylvania.

Devoe faced a hearing Monday for extradition to Travis County, Texas, where he allegedly killed five people on Aug. 24 and stole a car to drive to Greencastle, Pa., where he allegedly killed an 81-year-old woman and stole her car to drive to New York, the American-Statesmen reported.

Devoe's sister, Elizabeth Petrie, who lives with Devoe's mother and brother on Long Island, said Devoe had scared his family for years with erratic behavior and heavy drinking.

"You never knew if he was going to be a loving person or a scary person," Petrie told the newspaper. "He just went off."
