Confidence poll: Bush 34, Democrats 50

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Hours before U.S. President George Bush was to give a televised address on Iraq Thursday, a CNN poll found he had a 34 percent confidence vote.

Of 1,017 adults polled by telephone, Democrats in general had a 50 percent confidence vote for moving the country in the right direction, the network reported.

Bush is expected to announce an "undoing" of the surge of 30,000 troops dispatched to Iraq in January, which would bring the number in Iraq back to 130,000.

The report also said 63 percent of respondents oppose the war, while 34 percent support the 4-year-old conflict.

The numbers were similar about Bush's overall performance in office, with 61 percent disapproving, the poll said.

The Opinion Research Corp. poll had a margin of error 3 percentage points, CNN said.
