Killer recaptured 2 days after escape

WINSLOW, N.J., Sept. 11 (UPI) -- A man who was committed to a New Jersey psychiatric hospital after a double homicide was found Tuesday on the grounds, two days after he escaped.

William Enman did not return Sunday from an unsupervised walk at the Ancora Psychiatric Hospital. A state trooper found him in the woods, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Enman, 65, a former Marine, admitted in 1975 that he had beaten his roommate and the roommate’s 4-year-old son with a baseball bat. He was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and found not guilty by reason of insanity.

The escape set off a massive search. While police concentrated on the hospital grounds, they also checked land Enman had purchased in Canada.

Enman reportedly had a backpack with camping equipment when he left. He was to meet with a judge this week to determine his status and the degree of independence he would be allowed at the hospital.
