MANSFIELD, Mass., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A pilot from Portland, Maine, and one of his three passengers were killed Saturday in a small-plane crash at a Massachusetts airport.

Police in Mansfield said the plane, a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, had just taken off from the Mansfield Municipal Airport when the pilot, Lawrence Mann, radioed a distress call. Mann apparently stalled the plane as he tried to return to the field, The Boston Herald reported.

Mann and Cabot Squire, also of Portland, died when the plane crashed on a rocky ledge near the airport. Jared Lamey of Saco, Maine, and Matthew Kramer of Mansfield were critically injured.

The airport was holding a “fly-in” for antique and experimental planes, but Mann was not a participant.

Officials said Mann had flown from Maine to pick up Kramer, and the four were continuing on to another destination.
