Schwarzenegger blasts California GOP

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says his party is doomed if it cannot move toward a political center, it was reported Saturday.

"We are dying at the box office. We are not filling the seats," Schwarzenegger told 1,200 delegates at the semiannual state party convention in Indian Wells, the Los Angeles Times reported

Schwarzenegger cited the California GOP's failure to embrace independent and moderate voters, and blamed politicians, such as himself, who vote and govern from the middle, the Times reported.

"Our party has lost the middle, and we will not regain true political power in California until we get it back," he said.

His speech drew a mixed response, especially from conservative party leaders who have called Schwarzenegger a Democrat masquerading as a Republican, the Times reported.
