Bangladesh private TV off air

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- A new private TV news station in emergency-ruled Bangladesh has closed, days after broadcasting last month’s student-led anti-government riots.

The 24-hour CSB station -- the only private channel in the country, which began operating only recently -- had received a warning from the military-backed government about showing footage of the riots, the BBC reported.

Officially, the station was told by regulators -- who came with security personnel Thursday to close the facility -- that it must provide information about its frequency allocation before resuming operation, the report said. CSB executives, however, reportedly are not convinced by the official reason.

CSB had earlier been told its broadcasting of the riots endangered national security and public safety. The student-led riots, which began in Dhaka and later spread to other cities, had demanded an end to the emergency rule after the government came to power earlier this year.
