Police question mother of missing girl

PRAIA DA LUZ, Portugal, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- The mother of Madeleine McCann, the 4-year-old girl who disappeared from a holiday apartment, was questioned for 11 hours Thursday by Portuguese police.

Kate McCann arrived at the police station in Praia da Luz at about 2 p.m. Hours later, she came out looking exhausted and shaken, The Guardian reported.

Her lawyer, Carlos Pinto de Abreu, said she was questioned as a witness, not a suspect. Her husband, Gerry McCann, was scheduled to be interviewed Friday.

"Kate McCann has returned to Portimao to be questioned by the Portuguese police, to assist them in their investigations," a spokeswoman for the couple said. "Kate and Gerry are happy to help the police in their investigations to find their daughter, as they have since she was taken."

Madeleine vanished May 3 while the McCanns were eating dinner at a restaurant within sight of the building where their three children were sleeping.
