Man mauled by bear in Washington

OLALLA, Wash., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- A man from Port Orchard, Wash., is listed in serious condition after being attacked by a black bear in the Banner Forest Heritage Park.

The 51-year-old was riding his bike with his two dogs, when he rounded a corner and was confronted by the large bear, Washington’s Kitsap Sun reported Monday.

South Kitsap Fire and Rescue battalion Chief Ron Powers said the man tried to use his bike as a shield against the bear but it did not work and the bear tore apart the man’s left arm.

His neck, back, face and right ear were also injured but the man still managed to ride his bike out of the forest where two other mountain bikers called 911.

An ambulance arrived and took the man to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife responded with dogs to find the bear, but ended the search at nightfall.

Powers added that if the bear is found, authorities plan to kill it for attacking a human.
