Sens. Schumer, Ensign debate ethics

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and John Ensign spent Sunday debating whose party has a better recent track record when it comes to ethics.

Appearing on ABC News' "This Week," Ensign, a Republican from Nevada, said his party's quick response to the airport sex solicitation scandal that sank Idaho's Larry Craig shows the GOP is serious about members' ethical conduct.

"That's one of the things that ... I'm proudest about our leadership, is the swift action, not only calling for an immediate Senate investigation, ethics investigation, removing him from his committees, but also sending the signal to him that it was probably best that he resign," Ensign said.

Schumer, a New York Democrat, said that while "no party is without its blemishes," Republicans took no action ethics reform for the six years they controlled Congress and the Democrats have taken strides to improve the situation since regaining control.

"We got into office and we've passed major ethics reform to deal with earmarks, to deal with campaign finance reform and bundling, and to deal with the lobbying," Schumer said.
