Uzoegbu is believed to have hidden in a bush and attacked each of the women at different times as they passed in the village of Mbase. All of the victims were from the same family.

"I am told he wanted to kill more people but my men had to engage him," state police Commissioner Donald Iroham said of Uzoegbu.

Police spokesman Linus Nwaiwu said Uzoegbu threatened police officers with the bloody knife he allegedly used in the beheadings. He said officers shot Uzoegbu in the leg and he died on the way to a hospital.
