Report: Arap Moi of Kenya stole millions

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Former Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi and his family allegedly moved millions of dollars in government money out of the country, a leaked report said.

The report was prepared by Kroll, a company specializing in risk assessment and security for the Kenyan government and completed in 2004, London newspaper The Guardian reported Friday. But the report was never made public and Kroll hasn't confirmed that the leaked document is authentic.

According to the report, Moi and at least two of his sons acquired hundreds of millions of dollars and siphoned off as much as $2 billion from Kenya. They allegedly bought expensive real estate in New York, London and other cities, a large ranch in Australia and a bank in Belgium.

Moi ruled Kenya for 24 years, stepping down in 2003. Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki, who defeated Moi’s chosen successor by running on an anti-corruption platform, became entangled in a scandal shortly after Kroll submitted the report.

"We did not find that the report was credible,” Alfred Mutua, a government spokesman, said. “It was based a lot on hearsay."

The report appeared first on Wikileaks.
