MOSCOW, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A Russian official said the government may re-investigate the 2003 death of journalist Yuri Shchekochikhin.

Shchekochikhin, an investigative reporter for the liberal newspaper Novaya Gazeta, died in mysterious circumstances, Itar-Tass said Thursday.

Russia's Investigations Board chairman Alexander Bastrykin told Itar-Tass that the board is ready to re-examine the case but an official appeal to it will be needed to launch the process.
