Barak urges stronger anti-rocket defenses

TEL AVIV, Israel, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- The threat of Hezbollah rocket strikes is greater than before the Second Lebanon War, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak told the Knesset Monday.

The militant Shiite group has increased the number of long- and short-range rockets within striking distance of Israel since the war last summer, Barak said before the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Haaretz reported.

During the 34-day war, which was triggered by attacks on Israeli soldiers, Hezbollah fired almost 4,000 rockets at northern Israel, the newspaper said.

In response to the growing threat, Barak called for better anti-rocket defenses and better training of the Israeli military.

Monday's meeting was the prime minister's first appearance before the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
