MOSCOW, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Russian prosecutors said Monday 10 people were arrested in connection with the Moscow contract killing of journalist Anna Politkovskaya last October.

Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika made the report to Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying the investigation had "advanced seriously," Itar-Tass reported.

The report said those arrested hadn't been formally charged.

Russia came under international pressure to shed light on Politkovskaya's shooting death in the elevator of her Moscow apartment building on Oct. 7, 2006.

The 47-year-old writer centered her career on disparaging Putin and his policy in Chechnya, the Novosti news agency reported.

She worked for the Novaya Gazeta newspaper and wrote two books.
