NORTHWOOD, N.D., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- One fatality and heavy damage were reported Monday, hours after a tornado touched down amid trailer parks in Northwood, N.D.

A Grand Forks (N.D.) County Sheriff’s deputy told the Grand Forks Herald the cyclone hit at 8:50 p.m. Sunday and spun for 2 minutes.

Emergency sirens sounded in the community southwest of Grand Forks several minutes before the strike, the report said.

There was no immediate additional report on the fatality nor the number of people injured.

The owner of the two trailer parks which had 19 occupants, Rick McDonald, said both parks were destroyed.

"To me it doesn’t look like there’s anything salvageable," McDonald told the newspaper. "There's a new double-wide that is just gone. Who knows where it's at."

By 11 p.m., about 200 emergency personnel had converged in the town but their efforts were delayed by a second wave of rain, hail and potential tornadoes, officials said.
