DAMASCUS, Syria, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal said there has been a policy change in the organization Israel and the United States consider a terrorist group.
In an interview with CNN in a safe house in Damascus, the 51-year-old who has led the organization since 2004 said one of the critical mistakes the United States has made wasn't backing the democratically elected Hamas government.
He told the network he would welcome talks with touring U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice next month, and said the Bush administration was ignoring developments.
"Hamas changed a lot and great efforts have been made to conform with the realistic positions of Palestinians and Arabs," he said. "When Hamas says with other Palestinians forces that we demand a Palestinian country as the border was back in 1967 -- isn't this a development change?"
There have been no direct Hamas-U.S. talks, as the United States and numerous other countries consider it a terrorist group for its attacks on Israel and refusal to recognize its sovereignty.
