Almanac: Cold winter east, warmer west

The 2007-08 Farmers' Almanacs for the United States and Canada predict a colder winter than usual in the east and warmer than usual in the west.

"This is not to say that there won’t be any snow in the North Central region but we do feel that overall Mother Nature is showing no mercy to the east and being a little more forgiving in the west," said almanac editor Peter Geiger on Monday's newest publications.

Cold and snowy weather is forecast to prevail over the Great Lakes region.

Other highlights of the book of forecasts is that Tornado Alley in the U.S. heartland will see "unusually active" season in 2008 and the Gulf Coast "directly in the crosshairs" for hurricanes in mid-July, mid-August and mid-September.

Throughout North America, the U.S. and Canadian almanacs predict summer 2008 will be "uniformly warmer than normal," with precipitation averaging near or slightly below average.
