SYDNEY, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Horse trainers at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse say they're opposed to Pope Benedict XVI holding mass on their turf next July.

The pope’s appearance is scheduled as the centerpiece of World Youth Day, the newspaper The Australian said Thursday.

Under the organizers’ original plan, trainers and their 700 horses would be removed from the site for 10 weeks. Now organizers say the trainers and horses will only need to be away for three days.

Trainers are concerned about receiving compensation for the disruption and the difficulties of restoring the track to good order, the newspaper said.
