Coalition kills al-Qaida weapons dealer

BAGHDAD, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Coalition forces have killed an al-Qaida weapons dealer and captured 10 other suspected terrorists near Baghdad.

The weapons dealer allegedly was planning an attack on a local military base when he was gunned down, the U.S. Department of Defense reported.

Also, about 100 al-Qaida terrorists killed 20 people and 12 others were kidnapped Thursday, police said.

Among the dead was the Shiite imam and two of his sons, police told KUNA, the Kuwait News Agency. About 22 of the attackers were caught, but others escaped with hostages, including women and children, the report said.

In Baghdad, a U.S. military statement said a double suicide vehicle attack on a coalition outpost in northern Baghdad Wednesday night killed four Iraqi soldiers and injured 15 Iraqi and U.S. troops.

The number of U.S. military deaths in Iraq stands at 3,723 since the March 2003 invasion, with a total of 65 this month, CNN said.
