KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Former Sen. Fred Thompson told the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention Tuesday the United States must not fail in Iraq.

Thompson, an unannounced candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, gave few details about his strategy in Iraq should he be elected president, The Kansas City Star reported.

"Failure makes our problems much greater than they are today," he told the delegates to the 108th annual convention.

Thompson, an actor who once represented Tennessee for a single term, was one of a parade of candidates to address the delegates. On Monday, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said pulling out of Iraq would be “a mistake of colossal historic proportions.”

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama also have addressed the veterans group.

"History tell us that division about ourselves, giving off the appearance of weakness, does not achieve peace, but makes things more dangerous,” Thompson said.
