WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A California congressman faces a misdemeanor assault charge after an alleged altercation with a United Airlines employee at Dulles International Airport.
Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif., was given a summons Sunday night, Copley News Service reported. He has an Oct. 12 court appearance in Virginia's Loudon County.
A spokeswoman for the airport authority alleged Filner entered an employee-only area in the baggage claim section, pushing past an employee to do so. By the time police came, he was no longer in the employee-only area.
The unidentified airline employee filed the assault charge.
Filner’s office issued a statement saying he is on a trip to visit troops in Iraq.
“United regrets that the customer experienced a delay in claiming his bag. The safety and security of our employees and our customers is our No. 1 priority, and we are fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation into this incident,” the airline said in a statement.
