HOUSTON, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A retired U.S. Marine sergeant has gotten his "official" Purple Heart 55 years after he was wounded in Korea, it was reported Tuesday.
Nyles Reed, 75, of Houston, was given his medal Monday by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, after military officials awarded him a certificate but said he would have to pay for his own medal, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Cornyn called it "embarrassing" treatment and stepped in when he learned of Reed's predicament.
Reed was wounded on June 22, 1952, when a Chinese artillery shell hit his Jeep, the Chronicle reported. He had a deep gash in his face stitched at an observation post and immediately returned to duty, the Chronicle reported, adding Reed applied just three years ago for the Purple Heart, established in 1932 to honor members of the military wounded or killed during enemy action.
"You know, they often call (Korea) the forgotten war," Reed said. "As long as I'm around it won't be forgotten."
