LONDON, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A potential new suspect in the disappearance of Britain's Madeleine McCann is reportedly under surveillance and may be arrested in a matter of days.

Unconfirmed reports in a Portuguese newspaper said British police have their eyes on a suspect in connection with the McCann case, The Daily Mail reported Monday.

Madeleine vanished during a family holiday in Algarve, Portugal last May just a week before her fourth birthday.

In its report, the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha didn't name the latest suspect and left unclear whether the person was actually suspected of involvement in the case or was wanted as a witness.

The Daily Mirror said detectives are working on the theory that Madeleine might have been killed by a burglar who dumped her body in the sea.

Police reportedly re-examined a series of break-ins at the resort where the McCann family was staying and studied local tides and current patterns.
