Poll: Pessimism persists on surge

NEW YORK, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- A majority of U.S. residents polled by CBS remain pessimistic about the direction of the war in Iraq.

Two-thirds of those polled say the war is going badly, while 29 percent say it’s going well, CBS News reported Tuesday,

However, those polled were more optimistic than last month about the troop surge in Iraq, said the poll released Monday.

A total of 29 percent said they now believe the troop surge is having a positive impact, an increase of 10 points from last month, while 15 percent said the surge is making the situation worse, and 46 percent said it’s had no impact either way.

On the subject of troop withdrawal, 30 percent of those polled said all U.S. troops should be removed from Iraq, while 33 percent favored a partial troop withdrawal and under one-third said troop strength should increased or kept the same.

In all, 1,214 adults nationwide were interviewed Aug. 8-12 by telephone for the survey, which has a 3 percent margin of error, CBS said.
