Lawsuit challenges traffic 'roundabouts'

DETROIT, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- A U.S. lawsuit filed in Detroit alleges a Michigan county’s replacement of road intersections with "roundabouts" discriminates against blind pedestrians.

At "roundabouts" vehicles enter traffic traveling around a circular island and peel off at the relevant road.

The Detroit News said the suit was filed by a blind lawyer, Richard Bernstein of Farmington Hills, Mich., on behalf of three area residents who are also blind.

The suit alleges violations of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

Federal studies show roundabouts decrease fatal accidents by 90 percent, the News said, but the suit alleges roundabouts will replace conventional intersections that have timed lights and allow the disabled the opportunity to cross.
