Harper to host Calderon at cottage

OTTAWA, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has invited Mexican President Felipe Calderon for an overnight stay at his weekend cottage.

Calderon and his wife will be Harper’s first overnight houseguests at the residence in the Gatineau Hills in Quebec, The Toronto Globe and Mail reports. The visit will follow a NAFTA summit meeting next week.

U.S. President George Bush plans to interrupt his own vacation in Texas for the NAFTA meeting and then plans to return home immediately.

The visit shows the closeness between Harper and Calderon, who are about the same age, have young families and, as conservative economists, the same political leanings.

After the end of the summit and before the visit to Harrington Lake, Calderon and Canadian officials will hold bilateral meetings in Ottawa. Harper and Calderon will also hold a joint news conference.
