Man hospitalized after bridge jump

SARASOTA, Fla., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Police in Sarasota, Fla., say a man suffered internal injuries after he jumped from a bridge in an apparent attempt at a daredevil stunt.

Joseph Scott Porter, 42, dropped 65 feet from the John Ringling Causeway bridge to the water while a teenager made a video recording of the attempt, the Sarasota Herald Tribune reported Monday.

Sarasota Police spokesman Jay Frank said Porter was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and the 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with culpable negligence.

Robert Edwards, who was on the boat that first approached Porter after his fall, said he was talking before authorities took over the rescue.

Frank called the incident a "'Jackass' stunt," referring to the TV and movie series that features people performing stunts that are often dangerous.

Porter has been arrested more than a dozen times for charges including possession and sale of marijuana, battery and driving with a suspended license.
