14 terror suspects named enemy combatants

MIAMI, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Fourteen detainees at Guantanamo Bay who were interrogated at secret CIA sites were deemed "enemy combatants" Thursday by a Pentagon review panel.

The Miami Herald said the designation is the first step toward a possible military trial.

The detainees include alleged Sept. 11, 2001, mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed and the men who allegedly planned the October 2000 suicide bombing of the USS Cole and the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

U.S. President George W. Bush ordered the men transferred from secret CIA custody to Guantanamo last year, saying the suspects should be tried by military commission, the newspaper reported.
