NEWARK, N.J., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Two suspects were arrested Thursday in the killing of three college students gunned down in a Newark, N.J., schoolyard.
Jose Carranza, 28, who became a suspect after police found a fingerprint on a beer bottle at the crime scene, surrendered in the afternoon, the Newark Star-Ledger reported. A warrant was issued for his arrest Wednesday night.
The other suspect, a 15-year-old whose identity has not been released, was arrested in the early morning.
Terrance Aeriel, Iofemi Hightower and Dashon Harvey, all students at Delaware State University, were shot in the head Saturday night. Natasha Aerial, Terrance’s sister, was wounded but survived.
Natasha Aerial reportedly identified Carranza in a photo array.
Mayor Cory Booker, at a news conference, said that Carranza is the “principal suspect.” He said investigators believe others were involved.
Booker said that there are no signs of gang involvement or racial motivation, although the killers were Hispanic and the victims black.
