Odorless fumes send children to hospital

NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Several children and teenagers were hospitalized after a yacht engine leaked carbon monoxide into the vessel, which was anchored off New York.

Those hospitalized range in age from six to 18, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.

All victims are expected to recover, including two who had lost consciousness.

Officials said the boat was spewing "out of sight" levels of the colorless, odorless gas.

"It was a carbon monoxide leak from the engine," said Chief Jim Dalton, director of marine operations for the Fire Department. "It was out of sight. There were 800 parts per million. We evacuate (buildings) when there's only 90 parts per million."

Firefighters told the Daily News that the weekend incident could easily have been fatal.

"We're not sure what happened," said a relative of the family who own the yacht. "We just want to make sure everybody's all right."
