Darfur rebels try to form united front

ARUSHA, Tanzania, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Talks held Sunday in Tanzania between representatives from the top Darfur rebel groups are aimed at forming a united front among the Sudanese opposition.

Top political and military leaders from the rebel groups are attempting to form an alliance to aid them in any future negotiations with the Sudanese government, Alalam Satellite TV reported.

The reconciliation talks, which have lasted three days, are supported by both the United Nations and the European Union.

The rebel groups are seeking stability and security in the portion of the Sudan ravaged by years of conflict.

Jan Eliasson, the U.N. envoy to Sudan who is helping mediate the talks, said Friday that a recently announced deployment of peacekeepers offered hope for stability in the region.

"For the first time in a long time, I have a feeling of hope for Darfur, a sense of opportunity not to be lost," he said.

Alalam said the last peace talks between the rebels and government officials resulted in an agreement that only one rebel group supported.
