2 convicted of Sierra Leone war crimes

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The United Nations-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone has convicted two men of crimes committed during the country's civil war in the 1990s.

Moinina Fofana and Allieu Kondewa -- former leaders of the pro-government Civil Defense Forces militia -- were each found guilty of four counts of murder, cruel treatment, pillage and collective punishments, the U.N News Service in New York said Friday.

Kondewa was also convicted of recruiting child soldiers.

The defendants were each acquitted of two counts of crimes against humanity and one count of war crimes, while Fofana was found not guilty of recruiting child combatants.

Prosecutors said Fofana served as national director of war for the CDF and Kondewa acted as high priest for the militia.

A third accused CDF leader, Sam Hinga Norman, died in February.

Fofana and Kondewa will be sentenced at a later date.
