Libya links Lockerbie convict, medics

TRIPOLI, Libya, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Libya thinks the only man convicted in the 1998 Lockerbie bombing could be sent home in exchange for the release of six foreign medics.

Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, a former Libyan intelligence agent, is in prison in Scotland after being convicted in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 which killed 270 people, 11 of them on the ground.

A Scottish review panel said he may have been wrongly convicted and sent his case back to the country's High Court, The Times said in London.

The six foreign medics were under a death sentence in Libya for allegedly infecting children with HIV.

Moammar Gadhafi's son, Saif ul-Islam Gadhafi, Libya saw a connection between Megrahi's appeal and possible extradition and the release of the foreign medics, which was engineered by France, The Times said.
