GAZA, July 31 (UPI) -- The Palestinian political and militia group Hamas is recruiting for a new security service for the Gaza Strip, Ynetnews reported Tuesday.
A source told Ynetnews the new security forces would operate separately from the group's military wing and would be responsible for keeping order in the city's streets, fighting crime and directing traffic.
The London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat Arabic language newspaper also reported Hamas is working toward establishing a new intelligence branch in Gaza within "a few weeks," the report said.
Hamas, which has a parliamentary majority, took control of the Gaza Strip in battles with rival Fatah militants. In turn, Fatah has control of the West Bank.
