Feds search Sen. Stevens' Alaska home

GIRDWOOD, Alaska, July 30 (UPI) -- Federal lawmen descended on the Alaska home of Sen. Ted Stevens Monday, allegedly looking for evidence in an ongoing bribery investigation.

FBI and IRS agents executed a search warrant at the seven-term Alaska Republican's Girdwood residence as part of their probe into a corruption scandal allegedly involving various lawmakers and officials of VECO, an oil services corporation, AlaskaReport.com said.

Stevens and his son, former state Senate President Ben Stevens, have been targets of a Department Justice investigation concerning improvements made to the senator's home by contractor Bill Allen, who has pleaded guilty to bribing state lawmakers.

"I continue to believe this investigation should proceed to its conclusion without any appearance that I have attempted to influence its outcome," Stevens said in a written statement. "I will continue my policy of not commenting on this investigation until it has concluded.

"I urge Alaskans not to form conclusions based upon incomplete and sometimes incorrect reports in the media. The legal process should be allowed to proceed so that all the facts can be established and the truth determined."

Ben Stevens also is under investigation by a grand jury investigating Alaska fisheries.
