GLASGOW, Scotland, July 29 (UPI) -- Severely burned terror suspect Kafeel Ahmed is being kept alive to avoid retaliation from radical Muslims in Britain, it was reported Sunday.
Ahmed suffered third-degree burns to 90 percent of his body when he and his cousin allegedly drove a gasoline-filled car into the entrance of Glasgow Airport, causing a huge fire and widespread panic last month.
Ahmed, 27, is in a coma, remains on life support at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and has little chance of surviving, The Scotsman reported. The decision to keep him alive has more to do with politics than medicine, the newspaper reported.
Last week, at a reported cost of $40,000, Ahmed's burns were treated with special shark skin implants, to aid in healing.
British MI5 intelligence officials had hoped to interrogate Ahmed but now will settle for keeping him alive as long as possible, said one senior police official.
"They believe the longer he lives, the calmer things will get," the official said.
