MANCHESTER, N.H., July 29 (UPI) -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has rebounded from a sluggish campaign start in New Hampshire to become the state's Republican front-runner.
The Boston Globe said Sunday that while Romney initially struggled to gain traction in New Hampshire for his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, he recently opened up a 15-point lead in statewide polls.
Many experts have credited Romney's new campaign approach of early advertising statewide and garnering the support of influential activists in the region.
"It's really no secret what Romney's been doing," New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chairman Fergus Cullen said. "They have run the most traditional campaign in New Hampshire, characterized by the most visits here and the best grass-roots organization and by running a campaign aimed directly at likely Republican primary voters."
Romney has focused much of his efforts on New Hampshire since the last presidential election, making a total of 65 stops statewide during that time.
The Globe warned that while Romney is now leading in statewide early opinion polls, such electoral predictors have typically been inaccurate in relation to final primary victors.
