BRISBANE, Australia, July 27 (UPI) -- Officials in Australia on Friday dropped terrorism charges against an Indian doctor who had been accused in the British car bombing plot.
Director of Public Prosecutions Damian Bugg said "a mistake has been made" in the case against Mohamed Haneef, 27, the BBC reported.
Prosecutors initially said that a mobile phone SIM card provided by Haneef was found in the wreckage of a car at the Glasgow, Scotland, airport, but that claim proved to be untrue, the BBC reported. He'd been charged with supporting other suspects in the failed plot.
"In the circumstances of this case I do not believe that evidence to prove the case to the requisite standard will be obtained," Bugg said at a news conference, the BBC reported.
Haneef's immigration status in Australia remained unclear, even after the charges were dropped.
Australian Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews, who revoked the physician's visa July 16, said Haneef would remain on home detention while his status is reviewed, the BBC reported.
