WASHINGTON, July 26 (UPI) -- Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Phillip Kensinger could lose a star for his part in the investigation into the death of Pat Tillman, the Pentagon said Thursday.

Sources told CNN that the decision is up to Army Secretary Pete Geren.

Tillman, a football player who rejected a new contract with the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the Army, was killed in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan in 2004. The Army, which had publicized Tillman's enlistment, at first publicized incorrect details about his death.

Kensinger told investigators that he only learned Tillman had been killed by friendly fire after his memorial service, acting Defense Department Inspector General Thomas Gimble told CNN.

"We didn't find that credible. We found evidence that he knew in the April time frame," he said.

If Kensinger loses a star, his pension would be cut by about $1,000 a month.
