KABUL, Afghanistan, July 25 (UPI) -- South Korea Thursday condemned the Taliban killing of one of 23 Korean hostages held in Afghanistan, saying such acts can never be justified.
"The government strongly denounces the barbaric acts of kidnapping innocent citizens and harming (one of them) and, once again, urge them to send back our people held by kidnappers," said a statement from President Roh Moo Hyun's office, Kyodo news service said.
Separately, Yonhap news agency said the government had confirmed the slain hostage was found in central Ghazni province. The victim was identified by a South Korean TV as a 42-year-old pastor, Bae Hyung Kyu.
The Yonhap report said the government refused to confirm or deny a report by Japan's NHK contradicting earlier reports that eight hostages had been released. NHK was quoted as saying the Taliban took them back to their hideout after spotting armored vehicles in the area near where the handover was to take place.
Other reports Thursday said the Taliban have vowed to kill more hostages.
The militants, who abducted the South Koreans a week ago, reportedly want the Afghan government release an equal number of their prisoners. It was not clear if any ransom has been paid.
