AUSTIN, Texas, July 26 (UPI) -- Officials in Austin, Texas, say they will rename Town Lake "Lady Bird Lake" Thursday in honor of the late Lady Bird Johnson.
The Texas native, former first lady and early environmental advocate died July 11 at the age of 94.
Members of her family were expected to attend the renaming ceremony.
"Lady Bird Johnson exemplified Austin's most cherished ideals of respect and commitment to both its citizens and environment," said Mayor Will Wynn in a statement. "Her efforts in beautifying Austin helped to make our city the envy of the country, and I can think of no more fitting tribute than the naming of Lady Bird Lake."
"Lady Bird Johnson transformed Town Lake from a garbage-strewn eyesore into Austin's scenic and recreational centerpiece," said Austin City Council member Brewster McCracken. "Town Lake, and life in Austin, wouldn't be the same without her vision."
