U.N. asks Dutch to host Hariri tribunal

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, July 24 (UPI) -- The United Nations has officially asked the Netherlands to provide a location for an international tribunal for the killers of Lebanese leader Rafiq Hariri.

The government has not confirmed the tribunal will be set up at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Hariri, a former prime minister of Lebanon, died in early 2005 when a powerful bomb hit his motorcade in Beirut, killing 22 others with him. He was allegedly a target because he opposed Syria's intervention in Lebanon.

The tribunal is to be a mixed one, including international and Lebanese judges. But other issues are still under discussion, including security, handling the cost of the tribunal, holding the defendants and protection of witnesses.

Former Liberian President Charles Taylor is now being tried in The Hague. In that case, part of the advance agreement was that he would not serve any sentence in the Netherlands.
