BAGHDAD, July 24 (UPI) -- Talks about the security situation in Iraq began Tuesday in Baghdad between Iraq, Iran and the United States.
It was only the second time U.S. and Iranian officials met since May 28, and the scope of the talks was Iraq only, with various contentious issues between Washington and Tehran excluded, Alalam Satellite TV reported.
The delegation met in the office of Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki, who opened the talks with a short speech no one was interfering with Iraqi affairs and that Iraq would not interfere in other countries, Kuwait's KUNA news agency said.
The United States was represented by its ambassador in Baghdad, Ryan Crocker, while Tehran's envoy Hassan Kazemi Qomi headed the Iranian delegation.
Before the meeting, Qomi told Alalam one of the issues to be discussed was the release of five Iranians U.S. troops took into custody in the Iraqi city of Irbil earlier this year.
The U.S. military claims the men were aiding Iraqi insurgents, but Tehran denied that and said they had diplomatic immunity.
