Rocket launcher found in neighborhood yard

JERSEY CITY, N.J., July 22 (UPI) -- Some residents in Jersey City, N.J., found a rocket launcher in a yard, but police determined it was no threat because it is no longer operable.

However, it was still a mystery how the launcher ended up where it did, The Jersey Journal reported Sunday.

Police described the launcher as a 20-year-old military training device that was used to train troops on firing sequence and aiming. Once fired, police said, the rocket launcher cannot be reloaded and is often discarded.

The launcher has been sent to Fort Monmouth, N.J., where officials have identified which type of rocket launcher it is, the Journal said.

The launcher had a serial number on it, which the Department of Defense is using to try to determine where it came from, the newspaper said.
