Argentine first lady running for president

BUENOS AIRES, July 20 (UPI) -- Argentine President Nestor Kirchner's wife, after months of speculation, has officially declared her candidacy to succeed her husband in office.

First lady and Sen. Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner said she would follow in her husband's policies on efforts to pull Argentina out of the ruins of the 2001 economic crisis that crippled the country, La Nacion reported.

The election is scheduled to be held in October.
