GENEVA, Switzerland, July 18 (UPI) -- Congolese President Joseph Kabila said he is disappointed Switzerland will return only a fraction of an estimated $1 billion deposited by a former dictator.
Swiss Confederation President Micheline Calmy-Rey said her government is ready to return the $6.6 million deposited by Mobutu Sese Seko before he died in exile in Morocco in 1997.
Seko was ousted by rebels led by Kabila's father, Laurent, who took control of the country, BBC News reported Wednesday.
Speaking with reporters after Calmy-Rey's announcement, Kabila said he had expected the Swiss to announce they were holding at least $1 billion Seko embezzled from the government and was believed to have stashed in Swiss accounts. Belongings auctioned in 2001 from his villa in Switzerland netted $100,000.
